Frequently asked questions.

What services do you offer?

Fort Smith Therapy provides individual counseling for children, teens, and adults; couples and family counseling; play therapy; trauma-informed care; and support for anxiety, depression, grief, and life transitions. Sessions are tailored to your unique needs and goals.

Do you take insurance?

Yes. We accept most major insurance plans. Coverage varies by policy, so we encourage you to call your insurance provider to confirm benefits. Our administrative team can also help you understand your coverage.

What if I don’t have insurance or can’t afford therapy?

Fort Smith Therapy partners with our nonprofit, River Valley Community Outreach (RVCO), to help clients who qualify with financial assistance for therapy services. While Fort Smith Therapy and RVCO operate as separate organizations, we work closely together to ensure that financial barriers do not prevent individuals from receiving mental health care.

How do I schedule an appointment?

You can call our office, submit an appointment request on our website, or message us on Facebook or Instagram. We’ll help match you with a therapist who fits your needs, schedule, and insurance.

What ages do you work with?

We serve clients of all ages—from young children to older adults. Several of our therapists specialize in children, adolescents, trauma, and family systems.

Do you offer in-person or telehealth sessions?

Both. You can choose in-person sessions at our Fort Smith office or secure telehealth sessions from anywhere in Arkansas.

What should I expect at my first appointment?

Your first session is focused on building connection. Your therapist will ask about your history, goals, and what brought you to therapy. There’s no pressure—you can share at your own pace.

Do you offer play therapy for children?

Yes. We have Registered Play Therapists and therapists trained in child-centered and trauma-focused play therapy. We also support parents and caregivers throughout the process.

How long is each session?

Most sessions last 45–55 minutes, depending on your therapist and treatment plan.

How often will I come to therapy?

Most clients attend weekly or biweekly. Your therapist will collaborate with you to determine the best schedule for your needs.

Is therapy confidential?

Yes. Everything discussed in therapy is confidential, with a few legal exceptions involving safety. Your therapist will explain confidentiality at your first session.

Can I request a specific therapist?

Absolutely. If you already know who you’d like to work with, just let us know when scheduling.

Do you offer animal-assisted therapy?

Some of our therapists are trained in Animal-Assisted Therapy (AAT). Availability varies—ask when scheduling if you’re interested.

What is your cancellation policy?

We ask for at least 24 hours’ notice for cancellations. Late cancellations or no-shows may be subject to a fee depending on your therapist’s policy.

Do you handle crisis situations?

Fort Smith Therapy is not a crisis center. If you or someone else is in immediate danger, please call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room. For urgent mental-health support, call or text 988.
